Patient Care Responsibility

Patient Care Responsibilities, Night Call, Days Off

Students in 7-500 have a fairly busy curriculum, which will remove them from the wards at times during the day.  Nonetheless, students are expected to actively participate in patient care.  Therefore, it is critical for you to communicate your schedule to your residents and attending.  Your call schedule will be the same as that of your residents, but no more often than every fourth day.  On call, you are expected to stay as late as 10 PM.  If, however, you have taken an admission and your work is finished, it is reasonable to leave as early as 7 PM.  The policy regarding earlier departure on call must be agreed upon by your site coordinator, residents, and attending.

Emphasis in Medicine 7-501 is on patient care responsibility.  Students will be expected to take night call no more than every fourth night.  Duties for call will be outlined during orientation.  This is an important opportunity for students to learn crosscover and telephone care skills.

All learners (students, residents, and fellows) are expected to take one full day off a week.  This may be on a weekday, if that fits the schedule best.  The days off schedule are to be agreed upon by the entire team (student, intern, resident, attending).
