What will my schedule be like?
-
Your schedule will follow that of your resident on your team and you are subject to the same work hour restrictions as residents. Specifically, you will get 1 day off per week, you may not work more than 80 hours a week, you may not be in the hospital more than 30 hours at a time and you will get at least 10 hours off between shifts.
-
Your day off each week can be any day that works for you and your team. This is really something each student works out with their resident. Generally your day off would not be a long-call day. Sometimes students wonder about holidays. Certain holidays are guaranteed as days off by the Medical School. When this occurs, Martin Luther King Day for instance, this counts as your day off of that week. A day off is a day off, regardless of why it was provided.
- Your day on the wards will generally begin between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. As far as timing for leaving the hospital each day, this will vary depending on how busy your team is. Generally, you can expect to be out of the hospital no later than 9:30 PM on a call day. Other days, you will generally leave between 4 and 6 PM, but again, this will vary. Weekends are generally, but not always, days that you may leave a little earlier.
