Welcome to the Internal Medicine Clerkship!
This clerkship will form a cornerstone for much of your future professional life regardless of your choice of specialty. The Faculty, House staff, and administrative personnel in the Department of Medicine look forward to helping you in every way possible during this rotation, and in the future. We aspire to provide an experience that will allow you to develop the highest level of professional skill that you conceive possible for yourself to attain.
The primary goal of the Internal Medicine Core Clerkship is to help students become competent in the basic assessment and management of important, common problems in internal medicine to prepare them for postgraduate training. Through direct clinical and other learning experiences students will have exposure to many common medical conditions and the opportunity for continued growth as a physician.
All medical students at the University of Minnesota are required to satisfactorily complete two six-week Externships in Medicine, Medicine 7500 (Medicine I) and 7501 (Medicine II), together comprising the core medicine clerkship.
The medicine externships, Medicine 7500 and 7501, are separate rotations that are taken during the third and fourth years. Medicine 7500 emphasizes gathering and using clinical (bedside and laboratory) to identify patient problems, establish a differential diagnosis for each problem, and plan an appropriate evaluation. Satisfactory completion of Medicine 7500 is a prerequisite for Medicine 7501. Medicine 7501 continues to build upon this background, with added emphasis on patient management and therapeutics. These externships are organized around inpatient care services. You may also have an outpatient experience in Internal Medicine as a component of your Primary Care Selective.
