This clerkship will form a cornerstone for much of your future professional life regardless of your choice of specialty. All medical students at the University of Minnesota are required to satisfactorily complete two six-week Externships in Medicine, Medicine 7-500 (Medicine I) and 7-501 (Medicine II), together comprising the core medicine clerkship,

The medicine externships, Medicine 7-500 and 7-501, are separate rotations that are taken during the third and fourth years.  Medicine 7-500 emphasizes gathering and using clinical (bedside and laboratory) to identify patient problems, establish a differential diagnosis for each problem, and plan an appropriate evaluation.  Satisfactory completion of Medicine 7-500 is a prerequisite for Medicine 7-501.  Medicine 7-501 continues to build upon this background, with added emphasis on patient management and therapeutics.  These externships are organized around inpatient care services.  You may also have an outpatient experience in Internal Medicine as a component of your Primary Care Clerkship.
